AKOLA (She Works): The Perfect Mother's Day Gift

The Akola Project (Akola=She Works) is a non-profit business that provides opportunities to desperate mothers and their families. What could make a better Mother's Day gift? They have beautiful jewelry made by Mothers in Uganda, providing them and their families with the resources they need to get out of poverty.

An Akola Jewelry producer, comes to Akola's vocational centers everyday to earn a dependable living wage. When the necklace leaves her hands and reaches the customer's, 100% of the purchase is then reinvested into Akola's mission to empower women in poverty. She no longer has to wonder if her family will go hungry, she can now provide her children and elderly with healthy meals and clean drinking water.

Besides their mission, one thing I loved about receiving an Akola necklace (c/o) was that they provided a picture and story of the Jewelry Producer. The woman that made this Three Strand Horn Cut Out is named Namuganza Tereza. Namuganza is from Kibibi in Eastern Uganda. She is married and cares for 11 children and 4 elderly. She joined Akola in 2005.

"I aspire to be a happy person who is generous, welcoming, kind, to everyone, and a caring mother. I will educate my children and finish building my house. I will own a goat, a cow, and a motorcycle. I will learn more about crafts, how I can bring up my children with good morals. I will help my community by giving clothes and food to the needy." -Namuganza Tereza
