Faces of Friday: Brooke Saxon-Spencer of Belong Mag
The purpose of Faces of Friday: Faces of Friday is an interview-based series that I launched to provide readers with insight into the lives of some of the unique, inspiring, & influential people I have had the honor of meeting/ knowing. Life can take you to unexpected places and the people you will meet throughout the series are willing to share with you where their lives have taken them.
I believe that one of the most important things in this life is the connection we share with one another. Identifying with another human being is an amazing gift, and it can inspire you to learn, grow, create, and open your eyes to what the world has to offer. We are not alone in this crazy thing called life. Life is a beautiful thing filled with beautiful people, and not everyone gets the opportunity to share their story. I want to provide others the opportunity to share their story and I want to give you the chance to hear it, learn from it, and maybe, just maybe, identify with it. I believe wholeheartedly that we were all meant for incredible things. I hope you enjoy reading these stories, and I hope that they touch you in some way. We are all learning to navigate life’s murky waters, why not learn from each other along the way?

Brooke Saxon-Spencer-founder + editor of Belong Magazine
Belong Magazine was in the gift bag I received at the Create & Cultivate conference, to be honest I am not a big magazine reader so I set it aside. Then I came across Belong Magazine online and as I was ordering issue three I realized I had issue two sitting in my bedroom! I pulled it out and started reading, I completely fell in love with it.
Belong Magazine celebrates the art and community of blogging, social media and entrepreneurship. They want women to use their passions for a purpose, to inspire women to be authentic, and to encourage one another. They want women to know that they are enough, that they matter and that they have a place. They belong. I absolutely love what Belong Magazinestands for. As I was perusing the website I came across Brooke's about page; she's from the midwest, an introvert and wants to help encourage other women (sound familiar?) I had to reach out to her! She responded right away and didn't even hesitate when I asked her to be apart of Faces of Friday.

Where are you from?
I’m from the Chicago suburbs.
Where do you live currently?
LA area transplant nearly 3 years ago
Did you pursue higher education? What did you study?
I went to Wheaton College (IL) where I studied Creative Writing, Graphic Design and Photography.
What do you do for a living? Is this always what you had planned to be doing?
I have worked the last 17 years in healthcare management. No, I never thought I’d end up in healthcare, but due to the fact that we had a family business in the field, that’s where I landed out of college and just kept going!
What inspired you to start Belong Magazine?
As healthcare isn’t a particularly “creative“ field, I spent years trying to find my place within the creative realm. I desperately craved community, especially among other creatives. When it was determined that my family was going to be selling the business, I started imagining what my “dream job” would look like. When you combine creative writing, graphic design and photography, a magazine is a natural conclusion. And the idea that a magazine could be a tool to help women like me who need encouragement, inspiration or just to find their place—perfect! Hence, Belong emerged.
What are your hobbies?
I love to nap, read, watch tv and go to movies with my husband.
What are you the most passionate about?
What is your personal mantra?
It changes, but the last year and half, it has been “be still.”
Has life taken unexpected turns? And if so what were they?
Moving from the Midwest to LA was completely unexpected. Then, the selling of the family business! I thought I had job security, but apparently not!
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Make it happen. (Have you read the book by this title? I felt the whole book was advice!)
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be anxious!
