Santorini-Diary

HOTEL10.jpg

We went to Santorini for our honeymoon. I have always wanted to go there and we could not have been more impressed! When you google Greece more than likely you see a photo with white buildings and blue domes-that's Santorini. Ever see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? I think that's where this dream of mine originated. I was so consumed with planning the wedding, that Mike planned our honeymoon.

This is a little glimpse of what it looked like:

Santorini

Day One

We drove to Minneapolis to board the plane, little did we know that they wouldn't allow us to! Mike's passport was within 3 months of expiring and Greece will not allow you in the country if that is the case. Some countries won't allow you in if it's within 6 months of expiring! Something to do with the time it takes to get a visa, they don't want you to get stuck there. I made an appointment to get an expedited passport the next day, and we stayed in Minneapolis that night at the W Foshay and ate dinner at the Butcher and the Boar. It wasn't a complete loss!

Day Two

The next day we got Mike's passport and were allowed to hop on the plane! We flew Delta One, which I have never done before, it was AMAZING. Being able to lay down on a 10 hour plane ride is pretty incredible. Our lay-over was in Paris before we landed in Athens. The hotel we stayed at the Royal Olympic  had an amazing view of the Temple of Zeus and National Garden. The rooftop restaurant was, a perfect beginning to the honeymoon. We may have lost one night in Athens, but the view and room more than made up for it.

Day Three

We flew from Athens to Santorini which is a very short flight! We arrived in Santorini and were picked up at the airport and taken to our resort. (I had no idea where we even staying!) We pulled up to Aqua Luxury Suites in Imerovigli, Santorini, Greece. Our room had a balcony right alongside the cliff with extraordinary views. (Unfortunately I got a cold on the way over, but we didn't let that slow us down!) Mike's friend had been to Santorini and said if we have the opportunity to go to Kapari we should. The chances were slim that we would get in, they only have 4-6 tables on the balcony. The concierge called and got us a table that night! We had one of the best meals I have ever had in our lives with an incredible view of the sunset.

Day Four

That day we rented an ATV and toured around the island. You can drive the ATV's on the roads and make your way around the entire island. We headed to Oia and saw this really quaint fishing port. They catch the fish their and throw it directly on the grill. We went to the black beach, red beach, and made our way around the entire island, except for Fira, the capital we saved that for it's own day. We ate at Let's Eat and had amazing food! Mike said it was the best gyro he had ever had. We ended the day with wine in  our private jacuzzi.

Day Five

Mike went on a hike and I got a massage and then we spent the day laying by the pool and relaxed. (Getting Mike to relax is a win!) We stuck close to our resort, exhausted from all the stairs! Imerovigli has SO MANY STAIRS and our room being at the bottom meant we had the most to climb.

Day Six

We took the ATV and toured around Fira, Fira was not what we had expected it to be. It was very touristy and the day we decided to go there, 5 cruise ships were in the port. We then went to Oia to find the iconic shot of with the blue domes. That night we ate dinner at the Secret Wine Cave at the Mystique Resort.  That night was another dream come true, we had a private dinner with butler service! Again, another meal that was by far one of the best we had ever had.

Day Seven

We took another ATV ride around the island and then relaxed by the pool. For our last day we had made reservations for a wine tasting at Santo Wines. I had read on the blog Happily Grey that it was worth doing. She did the 18 wine tasting, so I booked the same one. I didn't think about it really, until we got there. The 18 wine tasting meant 18 glasses of wine EACH. Why we chose not to eat lunch that day I will never know, not one of our better decisions. Needless to say I called it in early that night, before our 8am flight out the next morning.

Overall I would say our honeymoon was a perfect vacation in an amazing place!
